Learning to Navigate Difficult Conversations (Brandon)

While no one enjoys them, we all must navigate difficult conversations at work at some point.  It is an essential leadership and communication skill, and like all skills, it can be enhanced. This session is focused on improving your workplace communication skills when the topic may be sensitive; the power may be imbalanced; the relationship important; and the risk of failure high. In other words, when the conversation is difficult.

Led by WinSETT Facilitator Edna Dach and using through discussion, self-reflection, and experience-based learning, you will:

  • Identify what makes conversations difficult for you
  • Understand the role of Emotional Intelligence in Difficult Conversations
  • Develop a plan to improve your skills for difficult conversations
  • Use a simple framework to prepare for and navigate difficult conversations – to enable you to move from difficult conversations to effective conversations
  • Understand some of the gendered and other stereotyped aspects of difficult conversations

This session is powered by ICTAM. It was created by the Canadian Centre for Women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology (WinSETT Centre).

Tech Mash Up: "Using Machine Learning to Predict Customer Behaviour in Financial Services"

Presented by DecisionWorks Consulting Inc.

 DWLogo2018

A good business strives to meet their client’s needs. The challenge in marketing to new clients is knowing exactly what those needs are and when they are required to be met. Think what the impact to your customer experience, your marketing strategy, and your bottom line would be if you could predict your client’s next purchase and when that purchase is likely to happen.

By relying solely on their own historical data, businesses can become masters of predicting customer behavior without relying on external data sources and external vendors to provide predictive business intelligence using more traditional demographic profiling.

Working with representatives from Applied Computer Science at the University of Winnipeg, DecisionWorks has proven reusable solutions to take historical member purchasing patterns (big data), and, using customized machine learning algorithms, predict future purchases with a high degree of accuracy.

The innovative aspect of this work is that state-of-the-art techniques in recurrent neural networks (RNN) will be used to make high-accuracy predictions on financial data, which is a new problem domain for these networks. The result will be greater differentiation for these financial services organizations, improved customer service and higher returns for members and stakeholders.
